I was called to write about this today and I’m sharing with you. Regardless of your belief or faith, it is my hope you will find something in here that resonates.
This verse John 14:27 is about hope and faith.
What keeps us back from living our best life or even from having our best day, is the feeling inside of us that somehow we can’t do something, we shouldn’t do something or if we do, it won’t turn out the way we desire.
Perhaps, people will wonder “why is she doing that? That won’t work or she’s not up to that.” There are so may voices inside us. Legitimate voices that come from past hurts or experiences. We should not ignore them, but we also should not let them own us and dictate the rest of our lives.
Be careful what you give your attention to
When you put your energy into a negative belief or fear and that is all you focus on moment after moment, you are carving a space in your soul for this belief to have a comfy home.
By virtue of what you focus on you will get more and more of that.
Fear is real for many of us. The fear I won’t measure up, the fear I’ll look stupid, the fear I’m not deserving, the fear I’ll fail. The list goes on and on. We all have them. And what I’m here to remind you is fear is a liar. These are beliefs we have allowed to seep in, to take over. They are not true! None of them! It’s easy for me to sit here and say that because I have not had the same exact experiences or lows you have; I’m not in your head.
What I do have are my own experiences; in fact story after story about how I too have pushed myself down or chose not to take that step for FEAR it wouldn’t work out.
The fears we don’t face become our limits
A few examples are the fear I had of leaving corporate America to forge out on my own years ago to start my own business. My partners at E&Y thought I was ludicrous for leaping out when they were offering me a promotion. I did it anyway. It hasn’t always been easy and I had to make significant adjustments along the way to support myself. But I fought through the fear somehow and did it anyway.
Another pivotal example is when my mother became terminally ill. One fact you may not know about me is that I’m an only child. My mom and I were very close, best friends actually. Historically, I received all my strength from her. This time, she needed me to make decisions, sit by her side, hold her hand and dry her tears. I was fearful I was not emotionally up to the role; that somehow the decisions and influence I had would not result in the best for my mom.
In those very dire moments, what my mom needed was for me to be strong. To live into my God-given power; to be the women she raised me to be. From a very visceral level, I took it all in and did it despite my fear. I did it anyway. I will tell you here and now it was not easy. But that’s the devilish game fear likes to play in our minds and hearts. To make us somehow think we can’t or if we try we will fail. I urge you, do it anyway!
Fear Not! Hope Creates Possibility (Pssst: And so does Action!)
You’re evicted
So the real call to action here is to evict those limiting beliefs from your soul and your heart. We must acknowledge what has happened to us in our past to create the fear and CHOOSE TO ACT differently. Easy? Not a chance! Possible? 1000%.
By taking one small step after the other, moving our bodies and minds through the fears that are so hungrily fighting for our attention, we can get there.
I’m certain you have pushed through fear in your life. Perhaps in daily small ways like choosing to get out of bed the morning of a big conversation, task, interview, or simply to start a very tough day. Perhaps, also in larger ways of choosing to take an unpopular stance in your role as a partner, parent or child. The point is, you have this ability in your repertoire. Call upon your strength now.
The important element is you must make that choice to move, to act, to live your life.
If you feel unworthy or uncertain, do it anyway. Take one small step. Call upon those who know you and from whom you can find strength and support.
