The Power of Pause

By Carrie Reed

Living by Design…Not by Default

There’s something about the middle of the year that invites reflection.

But here’s the thing: sometimes the middle comes and goes before we ever get the chance to pause.

Sound familiar? I’m right there with you!

Summer gets busy. Life keeps moving. Priorities shifted. Responsibilities multiplied. Unexpected opportunities appeared. Somewhere along the way, we stopped choosing our direction and simply started reacting to whatever came next.

Then one day we realize we're busy—but not necessarily moving toward what matters most. You’ve heard me talk about that feeling of being lost and may have even begun to read my series about it here on this site. This is exactly what I am talking about – that constant “busyness” yet still feeling like we are not getting anywhere. Or that nagging feeling of just not knowing which direction to take so we remain frozen. You can download my free assessment here; no email required to access!

Maybe that’s where you find yourself right now.

If so, I want to offer you a different way of looking at it.

You haven’t missed your moment.

You don’t need January 1.

You don’t need the first day of a month.

You don’t even need to be exactly halfway through the year.

You simply need a moment when you’re willing to stop long enough to ask:

Is the life I’m living right now still aligned with the life I want to create?

Because sometimes you don't need a fresh start.

You need a thoughtful pause.

As people constantly on the move, when we pause long enough to reflect, we often discover that our goals have changed because we've changed. Some dreams have grown. Others no longer fit. New priorities have quietly emerged. And perhaps even some of the people and communities we have surrounded ourselves with no longer support the “us” we desire to be.

That's not failure.

That's growth.

Without reflection, we drift so gradually we rarely notice until months—or even years—have passed. We keep saying yes, checking off tasks and fulfilling responsibilities, yet something inside tells us we've become disconnected from what matters most.

What we must do is meet ourselves exactly where we are and decide with compassion and intention, where we want to go from here.

Because the calendar doesn't get to decide when you're allowed to change direction.

You do.

And perhaps today is as good a day as any to RECLAIM what matters most.

To live by design...not by default.

But How do we start? What’s the right answer?

The answer isn’t guilt.

The right answer is awareness — curiosity — intention

·         Awareness creates clarity.

·         Curiosity creates growth.

·         Intention creates movement.

Those three simple truths became the foundation of a practice I now use personally and share with others. I had to figure a way out of the sinking feeling I was somehow not where I was supposed to be so I put pen to paper to work through the anxiety and pain of not feeling enough. The result was a simple practice I use regularly as a gut check to make sure I’m still me and I’m still living a life that fulfills me and fuels me.

So, my encouragement to you is do what I did. Instead of waiting until December to evaluate your year—or January to begin again—you can pause today.

Notice what's working.

Release what no longer serves you.

Choose your next step with intention.

I've created a simple framework to help you do exactly that.

It's called The RECLAIM Practice™.

It's designed to help you check in, adjust, and move forward with greater clarity, compassion, and intention—so you can live your life by design instead of by default.

The beauty of RECLAIM is that it doesn't ask you to overhaul your life. It invites you to make the next right adjustment.

Small, intentional course corrections made consistently can create meaningful transformation over time.

The RECLAIM Practice™ isn't a once-a-year exercise. It's a rhythm you can return to whenever life feels noisy, overwhelming, or out of alignment.

You don't need more pressure.

You need a pause.

The RECLAIM Practice™

A Simple Rhythm to Help You Check In, Adjust, and Move Forward

We often believe that change requires a major breakthrough.

A new job.

A fresh start.

A better plan.

A different season.

But lasting change rarely begins with dramatic action.

It begins with awareness.

The RECLAIM Practice™ was born from a simple observation:

When we intentionally pause to notice where we are, we make better decisions about where we're going.

When we intentionally pause to notice where we are, we make better decisions about where we're going.

Instead of judging ourselves for drifting, we become curious.

Instead of forcing change, we create space for it.

Instead of reacting to life, we begin living with intention again.

The RECLAIM Practice™ is designed to be just that—a practice.

Not another checklist.

Not another productivity system.

Not another standard you'll eventually feel guilty for abandoning.

It's a repeatable rhythm you can return to whenever life feels out of alignment.

Whether it's the middle of the year, the beginning of a new season, after a difficult conversation, the end of a project, or simply one of those days when you realize you've been running on autopilot, RECLAIM gives you a way back to yourself.

Each step builds naturally on the one before it. It can be used for a more involved mid-year assessment or used quickly in-the-moment to address a barrier or challenging situation that’s provoking a lost or disconnected feeling and preventing you from moving forward.

Each element of RECLAIM works together to move you from reacting to responding—from surviving to living with intention.

“Ask yourself: Am I intentionally creating the life I want—or simply managing the one that’s happening to me?”

R — Recognize

Pause with Hope.

Every meaningful change begins with one courageous decision:

To stop long enough to notice.

Many of us move so quickly from one responsibility to the next that we never give ourselves permission to ask how we're really doing.

We simply keep going.

Yet you cannot change what you haven't acknowledged.

Recognition isn't about criticism.

It's about awareness.

This is the moment to gently ask yourself:

• What feels energizing right now?
• What feels heavy?
• What has captured most of my time and energy?
• Am I living intentionally—or simply reacting?
• Where do I feel most aligned?
• Where do I feel disconnected?

There are no right answers.

Only honest ones.

Possibility begins the moment we become willing to see clearly.

E — Evaluate

Reflect with Compassion.

Once you've noticed where you are, the next step is to understand why.

This isn't about replaying every mistake.

It's about looking beneath the surface with kindness instead of criticism.

Too often we ask ourselves,

'What's wrong with me?'

A better question is,

'What has been influencing me?'

Sometimes it's stress.

Sometimes grief.

Sometimes exhaustion.

Sometimes success has subtly shifted our priorities.

Sometimes our nervous system has been carrying more than we realized.

Evaluation invites compassion.

It reminds us that our current reality didn't happen overnight.

And neither will meaningful change.

Give yourself permission to reflect without rushing to fix.

Awareness, when paired with compassion, creates clarity.

C — Choose

Move Forward with Curiosity.

Now that you've noticed where you are and reflected on what brought you here, it's time to make a choice.

Not ten choices.

Not an entirely new life plan.

One intentional next step.

Curiosity keeps us from believing we have to have everything figured out before we move.

Instead of asking,

'What's the perfect plan?'

Ask,

'What's my next right step?'

Small choices made consistently reshape our lives.

One conversation.

One boundary.

One habit.

One apology.

One opportunity.

One courageous 'yes.'

Or one equally courageous 'no.'

Progress isn't created by giant leaps.

It's built through intentional decisions repeated over time.

Choose what moves you closer to the person you're becoming.

L — Let Go

Release with Courage.

Let Go...

Let Go…

There comes a point in every journey when we must decide what we're willing to carry and what we're finally ready to put down.

Some of us are carrying outdated beliefs.

Others are carrying guilt over decisions made during difficult seasons.

Some are carrying unrealistic expectations.

Others are carrying relationships, commitments, habits, or responsibilities that no longer reflect who they desire to be.

We often convince ourselves that letting go means giving up.

In reality, letting go often means making room.

You cannot fully embrace what's next while tightly holding onto what no longer serves you.

This is not about abandoning responsibility.

It's about releasing what is draining your energy, clouding your perspective, or keeping you anchored to an earlier version of yourself.

Ask yourself:

• What do I need to release?
• What story have I been telling myself that no longer serves me?
• What expectations am I carrying that were never mine to begin with?
• What would feel lighter if I trusted myself enough to let it go?

Courage isn't found only in holding on.

Sometimes it's found in loosening your grip and opening your hands.

A — Act

Step Forward with Intention.

Reflection without action eventually becomes regret.

Insight only changes your life when it moves your feet.

The beauty of RECLAIM is that it doesn't ask you to overhaul your entire life overnight.

It asks you to take the next faithful step.

A single conversation.
Blocking time on your calendar.
Scheduling the doctor's appointment.
Updating your résumé.
Lacing up your shoes and taking a walk.
Starting the savings account.
Making the phone call.
Turning off your notifications.
Saying 'no' without apology.

These aren't dramatic moments.

They're intentional ones.

Over time, those small, repeated decisions become the architecture of a meaningful life.

Don't underestimate the power of one consistent action.

Momentum begins with movement.

I — Integrate

Live with Consistency.

Real transformation isn't found in one inspiring moment.

It's found in what happens after the inspiration fades.

Anyone can make a decision.

The challenge—and the opportunity—is learning how to live that decision.

Integration is where new beliefs become new behaviors.

Where intentions become habits.

Where clarity becomes your compass instead of a temporary feeling.

This is why RECLAIM is a practice rather than an event.

You return to it again and again.

After a promotion.
After a disappointment.
At the beginning of a new season.
At the end of an exhausting one.
Whenever life begins pulling you off course.

You don't need to start over.

You simply return.

Each time you do, you strengthen your ability to move through life with greater wisdom, resilience, and intention.

M — Move Forward

Continue with Confidence.

There is no such thing as a perfect life.

There are only intentional people making thoughtful adjustments along the way.

The goal isn't perfection.

It's progress.

Some seasons call for bold change.

Others call for quiet consistency.

Both matter.

Both move you forward.

Because success without alignment eventually feels empty.

But even small steps taken toward what matters most create a life that feels deeply meaningful and hopefully a little less lost.

Wherever you find yourself today, remember this:
You are not behind.
You are not stuck.
You are not defined by the decisions you've made or the detours you've experienced.
You are simply one intentional choice away from moving in a new direction. I don’t know about you, but to me that is a powerful reminder I needed to hear!

Living by Design...Not by Default

The RECLAIM Practice™ isn't about becoming someone new.

It's about returning to who you are at your best.

It's choosing awareness over autopilot.

Compassion over criticism.

Curiosity over certainty.

Courage over comfort.

Intention over reaction.

And progress over perfection.

My Encouragement to You…

Whether you use this practice every summer, every quarter, every month, or whenever life begins to feel out of alignment, remember this:

You don't need permission to pause.

You don't need a new year to begin again.

You don't need to have everything figured out before taking your next step.

You simply need the willingness to stop...

...notice...

...choose...

...and take one intentional step.

Because life isn't shaped by one extraordinary decision.

It's shaped by thousands of ordinary ones made with purpose.

So take the pause.

Ask the questions.

Trust the process.

Return to what matters most.

And keep reclaiming your life—one intentional decision at a time.

Awareness creates clarity.

Curiosity creates growth.

Intention creates movement.

That's the rhythm.

That's the practice.

That's The RECLAIM Practice™.
